Spring Cometh!

Spring is almost here! Yay!

I am super excited about Kua Designs’ colorful must-have Spring collection!  These girls have outdone themselves (again!) and they can’t wait to show off!  If you think you’ve been working out and doing all it takes to get yourself ready for Spring/Summer, know that you’ve got some serious competition in these fierce girls :)

Please come back soon to see the girls from Bolga, Axim, Nkran and Kumasi try to out do each other.

Today’s Jewel: Serge Mouangue

Every so often, I come across a designer/artist who I find really cool.

Today’s ‘jewel in my purse’ is Serge Mouangue. Born in Cameroon, raised in France, travelled the world – US, Mexico, Turkey, China. Currently based in Japan. I am loving his mix of African and Japanese cultures.

Coming from where I’m from

Do you ever get that warm fuzzy feeling when a random stranger smiles at you? Sometimes it’s enough to make one’s morning. I am back in the freezing cold again, after weeks of some intense tropical heat, and I find that the little things really do brighten up my day.  Will hot mugs of hot chocolate and white mochas from Starbucks make up for the iced cold glasses of bissap from Tante Marie that I left behind in Accra? *Sigh* …

Kua’s girls give me little time to ponder over this, however.  The girls from the new spring collection are feeling quite disoriented too, and I do not blame them one bit. You see, they have come a long way from different corners of the big GH, and they are having to travel right past the crimson haze of Amsterdam’s red light district, over a highway bypassing Atlanta’s rather silent Atlantic Station, to their temporary storage hideaway underneath the shadow of the Big Apple, only to be shipped out God knows where to a doting new, but nonetheless unknown, girlfriend. Yup, I would be anxious too. This is why I’m helping the girls out; they have requested that I tell you a little bit about where they’re coming from, just so you can relate a little better when one of them becomes your new girlfriend.

The Bolga line: This is Kua’s new pride, the first of its kind among all the girls. Bolga girls originate from the very North of Ghana, and are made of the finest calf fur.  Do not be fooled by Bolga’s chic and rather posh appearance and attitude. She gets that from the French influence of her neighbors in Burkina Faso.

Instead, focus on her wild side: she has been caught many a day riding wantonly on crocodiles’ backs in nearby Paga. See Bolga for yourself: chic, posh, wild and sexy rolled into a Kua clutch.

The Axim line:  If you find Axim rather edgy, it has everything to do with the metropolis she comes from: close to Cape Three Points, the southern-most point of her country. She looks directly over the little village of Nkroful, where the Founding Father of her nation was born, so excuse her cool confidence and her stubborn nobility.

Axim clothes herself in plain pattern-less fabric, only allowing herself a singular adornment of a colorful bow, rosette or other embellishment. How does she manage to remain so pure in spite of the recent discovery of a crude oil reservoir within her belly? That’s just our Axim: an edgy yet understated treasure.

The Nkran line: It doesn’t get any more cosmopolitan than within the capital city.  Nkran is the girl you want for a night on the town, for the cocktail at that fancy restaurant, or as you simply relax underneath some shade on the sand along the lovely Bojo Beach.

What’s more, the savannah vegetation just outside the city limits provides Nkran with enough straw and elephant grass for the beautiful woven look that her girlfriends absolutely love. If urban, fun and cosmopolitan is what does it for you, Nkran is the way to go.

The Kumasi line: Classic royalty. These ‘dadaba’ ones were raised mainly in the Manhyia palace on cocoa and the finest game (yes, aka akonfem in the Akan dialect, but who needs to know that?). If you are thinking richness and affluence to the point of indulgence, you are looking at the right set of girls.

They look up to their great grandmother Yaa Asantewaa, so watch out, for these girls are fierce and feisty. Made of Kua’s favorite African prints, Kumasi is an embodiment of the essence of its Asante people: fierce pride tempered by cultured royalty.

These new girls cannot wait to meet you, so when you see them on display in the next couple of weeks on Kua’s website, remember to smile and wave, just to make sure their feelings remain intact. They know I’ve told you this much about them, and if random strangers take time to smile at them, they will be expecting you to get to bonding with them just like old buddies!

Keep an eye out for Kua’s spring clutch collection!

Check us out in Canoe Magazine!

Some time in November 2009, I was contacted by Canoe magazine about featuring me, Kua Designs and Stringz Attached in their upcoming December issue. Yay!  You see, Canoe is one of the very few Africa-based culture and lifestyle magazines (of substance).  After providing all the information they needed, I waited patiently (not) for the issue to hit the stands!

The Canoe ‘Rare’ edition is currently available in Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. As one of three entrepreneurs featured in this issue, you will find a four page spread of my story, pictures of my work and what I have planned for the future. Enjoy!

My Trophy Girl!!!

She is ONLY 4 years old (ahem)!

I can’t believe people look at her and say hurtful things like “Oh my! Isn’t it time you updated that thing” or “Do they still make that” or “Please hide that” or “Don’t show that in public”.  Put these words aside – their actions are even worse—the chuckles, the finger pointing, the covering of mouth while bursting into laughter—you know that whole “this is just too embarrassing” reaction.  I respond with the eye-rolls – more like eye flips this time and I somehow let out an uncomfortable chucky (while thinking in my head “ if my chuckles blend in with theirs, no one would know my girl was the one being laughed at”).

She has become, without a doubt, the official laughing stock. Why?  Because she’s a year away from being an antique or because she wears banners that tell of juicy late night conversations, heated arguments and phone interviews. Banners that speak of envied conversations with people all over the world (Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria, Lebanon, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Nicaragua, England…), negotiations with vendors and boutique owners, customers, and back to back texting.  She comes wearing pink (metallic pink to be specific) and she is flexible (flipping her up and down whenever I feel like it).  She is not bulky (erm by 2001 standards), she is not fussy (no camera, no speaker – well, the speaker no longer works, no picture mail) – just  a good ole’ phone that’s meant for talking and talking only. She never came with a phone case but that’s ok because she looks good naked. She has no bells and whistles, no charms nor glittering nonsense. She just keeps it real! And she has been by my side all these 4 years (OK, maybe 5 years)! Unlike the others, she never got lost, stolen and she did not complain when she was accidentally forced to swim with me in the bathtub (more than once, might I add – oops).  Bravely, she survived bite marks from her four-legged brother (Piano the Shih Tzu). She made his bite marks look like dimples on her… how ingenious!

Now after 4 years or so of this love-fest, I am being forced to say goodbye for the following reasons:

–She longer holds a charge… I don’t care how long I charge her battery, the maximum I get is 30 minutes of talk time.

–Her battery (I mean her heart) comes out easily—without provocation. I could be in the middle of a call and the battery will fall out!  Bless her heart!

–And now some keys are proving difficult (‘7’ for example works when it wants to).

–To make matters worse, people (friends and even strangers) offer me free phones out of nowhere? Who asked them? LOL.

But every good thing must come to an end… I have found myself another phone… Actually, I’ve had the phone for a while now but I can’t bring myself to transfer service from my pink phone to this one…So this is a tribute to you – my way of saying good bye FOR NOW. I will forever keep you. Know this—you will always be around – in my thoughts (and in the thoughts of all those who made fun of you!) You will be resting peacefully on the bookshelf in my living room!

Yes girl; you have earned a trophy status!

The Optimist’s Creed

Promise Yourself:

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

The difference.

“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, just results.”
